Chicken Shawarma

Shawarma is a yummy middle east dish- one of my favorites. It is healthy like all my other dishes and easy to make. Why  dont you give it a try and let me know how it turned out.

Ingredients:(for 4 shawarmas)

  •  4 pita bread
  •  2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts

  •  Marinade:

  • 10 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 lemons, juiced
  • 1 cup yoghurt
  • 2 teaspoons curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon ground pepper
  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts

  • Shawarma Sauce:
    • 3 cloves chopped garlic
    • 1 cup  tahini (sesame paste)
    • 1 cups yoghurt
    • 1/4 cup lemon juice
    • Salt to taste
    Pita Fillings:

  • 1 small  tomato diced
  • thinly slice cucumbers (pickled)
  • thinly slices carrots (pickled)

  • Instructions:
    • Combine all the ingredients in the marinade. Add thinly sliced chicken pieces into it. Refridgerate the chicken and leave it overnight (atleast 8 hours) to marinate.
    • Preheat a grill. Place the marinated chicken on the grill until it has cooked on either sides.
    • Meanwhile you can make the shawarma sauce. Blend all the ingredients for the sauce. Add a little water to obtain a creamy mixture.
    • Once the chicken is done, place a little on a pita. Add  a 2 tbsp of diced tomato (or less if you dont like tomato), one or two small pieces of  pickled cucumber and carrot. Those of you who like chilli may add a pickled chilli as well. Pour in enough shawarma sauce and make a roll.
    • Your shawarma is ready. Instead of pita bread I use whole wheat roti as it is healthier.
